Winamp doesn't access MP3 player

This is a strange problem and is probably just the result of me not quite grasping all of Windows 7, which I've finally gotten around to install. Afterwards I installed the latest version of Winamp this morning.

In Vista I'd connect my PFS/"Plays For Sure" MP3 player (a Sony NWZ series which is fully working) and it's immediately available within Winamp. I'd then be able to access it in the Media Library window or through the 'Send To' function by right clicking a tune in the Playlist Editor.

However this behaviour is lost in Windows 7, instead the OS picks up the player and seemingly only allows me to browse the contents or undesirably use Windows Media Player.

Does anybody know what is going on? Or how I can get Winamp to take over access to my MP3 player?

by default it uses the MTP transfer protocol which is the root of all evil.

open device manager and find the player under portable devices. right click and update driver. choose manually update driver and there is an option something like UMS/MSC mode (i can't remember the exact wording). now it will appear in windows with a drive letter and behave like any usb drive. winamp shouldn't have any problems with it.

(doing this means it won't support the playback of DRM protected files though - you can always reverse the above procedure anyway.)

Cheers, tried that, and a few other options as well. The trouble is even after a reboot of Winamp, unplugging the player etc. etc. my player still can't be found within Winamp.

No I suppose its not, but annoying that I can't seemingly use the PFS standard at all unless I use Windows Media Player, which I don't want to.
