When I rip CDs onto my hard disk I painstakingly make sure each file's filename begins with the track number preceded by 0 so they appear in order in the directory listing. However, stupid Winamp seems to load them in some random order of its own whenever I enqueue a new directory into it. I don't know what it sorts them by - it's not track name, it's not filename, it seems completely random. It puts them back in order if I make it sort by filename, but I have to do it manually, after I've queued the tracks up. Is there no way to tell it to sort them automatically as it loads? I know there's an option called "When loading multiple files, sort files by name" in Options under Playlist, but toggling it on and off makes no discernible difference: it still sorts them by its own occult criteria!

No "switch to Foobar" replies please.

what are you using to rip your cds? as well as naming the files in the format that you want, it should also be tagging the files too? can you sort your playlist by it's tracknumber tag and not the filename?

I know if you rip tracks with Audiograbber it will put the filenames exactly how you want them.

I never get the Winamp problem though, every time I open or enqueue a complete folder it sorts by name which can be annoying when you rip stuff and forget to add a track number:(

I use CDex and the filenames are all correct, I just don't understand what Winamp is sorting them by! It's not alphabetically by filename, and it's not alphabetically by track name.

I just noticed something interesting as well: if I enqueue a directory, it sorts them by no order... but if I select individual files and enqueue them, it sorts them by trackname properly!

How do I force it to sort files within directories as well? I sorted out all my music files into directories by artist and album specifically so I could just queue things up by selecting them all through explorer rather than have to rely on media libraries of players.

well i don't use winamp normally..... but i've just installed it and it enqueues everything in the order i add it  just like you would expect. even if i mix up the order of the files in explorer, it still adds them in that same mixed up order as i added them. winamp does nothing out of the ordinary at all. :D

tried re-installing (might be worth manually clearing the registry of winamp entries after you've uninstalled?)
