cant install .exe at thwe moment as windows 7 is asking for an administrator password even though i am the only user and, obviously, am the only administrator.

tried right clicking but there is no install as admin option.

any help appreciated :)

The only reason why you should be getting the Over the Shoulder (OTS) elevation dialogue is because you have changed a setting either in the registry or the local security policy panel which requires even administrators to enter their credentials or you are using a standard user account which will obviously always require the user to enter the credentials of the administrator account to do anything that requires administrator privileges.

Which of the above have you done?

im using the only account on the system whitch user accounts tells me is an administrator account.

the .exe in question is just the firefox installer

edit: just scaled up and then back the UAC slide bar and firefox is installing - however i have another .exe for a program called ntr support (facilitates remote access) which keeps telling me i dont have the correct priviliges

The default account in Windows Vista and Windows 7 is called a Protected Administrator (PA). When you log in, you are running in Administrator Approval Mode (AAM) and are given two user identities, one with standard user rights and the other with administrator rights. The standard user identity is used by default obviously.

If you are running in Administrator Approval Mode, when something requests administrator privileges, you will be shown the consent elevation dialogue which you will simply need to accept to perform that administrative based operating. You don't need to enter the administrator credentials since you had already verified yourself as the administrator when you logged into the Protected Administrator account.

If you are running in a standard user account, when ever something requests administrator privileges, you will be shown the Over the Shoulder (OTS) elevation dialogue which will require you to enter the credentials of the administrator account on the system before you can carry out anything that requires administrator privileges.

The above is default behaviour. You can change a setting in either the registry or the local security policy panel which requires the user to have to enter the credentials of the administrator account even if they are logged into the Protected Administrator account. Unless you have changed such a setting or you are running in a standard user account, you shouldn't be getting the Over the Shoulder elevation dialogue. Are you defiantly getting the Over the Shoulder elevation dialogue?

If something requires administrator privileges to be able to operate correctly but it doesn't request it automatically, try right clicking on the installer or program and select the "Run as administrator" option, providing there is one. If there isn't, right click on the installer or program again and go to the "Properties" option. Under the "Compatibility" tab and then "Privilege level" heading, if the "Run this program as an administrator" is available, check it and try launching the installer or program again. If the option is unavailable, click on the "Change settings for all users" option and once the "Compatibility for all users" window has appeared, see if the "Run this program as an administrator" option is now available.

hi there,

the notice itself is not from windows - it pops up after the installer fails and appears to be a notice from the NTR program installer itself.

Just tried the above but, unfortunately everything is greyed out bar the previous versions of windows drop down.

it must be something the programmers need to fix. thanks very much for your time - i rather suspect that the above information will come in handy for a number of other programs anyway.
