how do you know if windows 7 is 32 bit or 64 bit.
also will 64 bit run on a vista home prumium 32 bit os

It'll tell you on the installation disk ? If it's both versions you will have a choice between x86 and x64 , x86 being the 32bit version. Windows 7 64 bit requires 2 gigabytes of ram and a 1ghz processor to run, so as long as your system has that it should be ok.

If by "run on" you mean upgrade from then no, you can't upgrade from 32bit to 64bit. It has to be a fresh install.
