Hi

Just a heads up for those who do not know the upgrade offer for Windows 8 ends on the 31st Jan.

So whilst, if you have a qualifying system, you can still upgrade to the Pro edition for £24.99 after the above date the prices (can only find it in dollars) will be....

  • The Windows 8 Pro upgrade edition will be available online and at retail for $199.99 MSRP (U.S.).
  • The Windows 8 upgrade edition will be available online and at retail for $119.99 MSRP (U.S.).
  • The Windows 8 Pro Pack will cost $99.99 MSRP (U.S.).
  • The Windows 8 Media Center Pack will cost $9.99 MSRP (U.S.)

To add what Mr-White as correctly noted....

You can get the media center pack still for free until that date as well, as long as you have bought the Pro version of W8. The link....

EDIT: As noted by Chaparral the Media pack addon for the Pro edition must be activated by the 31st Jan...

Your product key must be activated no later than January 31, 2013
Even if you do not wish to use Windows 8 for a while it might be worth buying it (and get the free media center) whilst the price is only £24.99 - at least you will have the keys available for both and you can just burn W8 to a disc or make a bootable USB stick etc for when you so wish to use it. But be aware that the free media pack needs to be activated by the 31st Jan.
I just kept the email from MS for the copies that I bought, with the keys, until I used them on our PC's when upgrading, including our HTPC.

I am glad that I managed to buy the upgrade for £14.99, and think that it worked out to be an "ok" deal over that of W7, but to pay those sort of prices I would have just kept with Windows 7.

I'm not really interested in upgrading right now, but I suppose I should just get on and buy it now for when I eventually do want to.

I was wondering whether there was a deadline for "First" activation?

(IE Can I Buy now and use it later or do I have to activate before the 31st)

Just want to be sure since big corps can sometimes do the nasty on you with things like this...

So can you, for example, buy the upgrade, but leave it in it's wrapper and continue to use Windows 7?

[Edit] Basically what Orionaut said...

there wont be. you just get emailed a key after your purchase. if the purchase is before the end of the month you get the discounted price, simple as. get the key emailed to you, and then keep the iso you download via the upgrade manager for whenever you want to install it.

They're having a laugh!
seems like the standard windows OS price? it has been on a ridiculously low offer for several months now.

Another question if you don't mind.

When paying for it, it offers me a DVD for £8 over the £25 - yet if I buy it from the online store the version with a DVD costs £50.

What's the difference? :)

I bought the full version of Pro on launch day, I felt I kinda owed it to them considering all the years I used a free o/s.

The free media pack upgrade runs out 31/01/2013 too

Tnx just bought another upgrade for a system with win 7 with the view to move to 8 later.

If I dont use it then ill find someone who needs it.

I remember saying months ago that people would complain when it went back to normal pricing.

If you haven't upgraded by now you were probably on the fence anyway. Going forward you're either going to build your own PC and grab the system builder version, or just buy a PC that ships with an OEM license anyway.

I must say the price is a shade on the high side though. It makes me wonder if they're setting the bar for a cheaper subscription route.

nothing, they want you to use the upgrade manager. just dont get a dvd, save yourself the money and download it to a usb disc or iso file. its only a few gigs.

As they want to get away for third party sellers, which take a cut and as such increase costs.

And they don't really want you to have a DVD either, again it ups the cost and complexity. Download just needs a server. DVDs need manufacturing, boxes and packages and shipping etc.

The cheaper they can make it, the more people will upgrade, the future is all online anyway.

To get people beta testing it quickly ;)

That was already done, ms have always had huge numbers alpha and beta testing, for months, almost a year wasn't it.
W8, like w7 has had very few issues. Even vista had few issues but as it pretty much needed every driver rebuilding, that's what caused most of its issues.
W7 & w8 would generally work on older drivers.

Just bought one for my desktop. Got the key, now just waiting for it to finish downloading.

yes good move
I was so very negative about Win 8, but I did upgrade to it. It took a little while to get used to it, maybe a few weeks. But it does everything Windows 7 did and faster.
Also the way Microsoft have tied in all the services like Hotmail (now outlook), Xbox music, Skydrive into the Win 8 environment impresses.
