Anyone got any experience with upvc windows which can help with this please

I have got old Anglian double glazing fitted at the moment and ive noticed the rubber seal outside has shrunk at either end which I think is the cause of a damp stain on the bottom of the reveal.

Can I just use a universal seal to wedge between the glass and plastic bead?

The seal at the moment is like an E shape that ls welded to the bead, I don't fancy trying to get the bead off incase it breaks. Could I just remove what I can of the E seal and just use a wedge type over the top of it instead?

Ideally you need to remove the bead and see what type of gasket it is. It sounds like its a loose gasket, so should be easy to replace. You can buy most replacement gaskets from window repair stores online. The just press into the bead.

Removing the bead is usually very easy. Gently tap a scraper or sharp chisel into the gap between the frame and bead and it should just come away. Then work your way along gently prising it away. Then to put it back it's just a case of tapping it home with a rubber/plastic mallet. Some windows have the side beads scribed to the top and bottom, so you would need to remove the sides first, but most are just mitred.

It shouldn't be causing damp though. PVC windows are designed with drainage holes so if any water does get past the gasket it'll drain out through the weep holes or on more modern frames the hidden drainage holes between the frame and the window sill.

Or a quick fix would be to blob a bit of silicone in there as macca suggested :D.

Ok, thanks fellas

I have just resealed the side of the frame where it joins the brick, I noticed some splits in the old sealant where the wall was getting damp but I will probably just use some clear sealant between window and frame.

I don't want to risk trying to take the bead off incase it breaks, then I would be in doodoo
