Whats the best solution to getting rid of the dot matrix affect around windows (rears and back) so you don't end up with an unsightly white line around them when tinting?

Get factory tinted glass.

Which is exactly why I've got another tailgate with tinted glass sat at my dad's for my car, awaiting painting, as my car has tinted side windows from the factory, but not rear (it was an option for some reason!)

That will cost a shed load!
Not to mention the cost of taking the existing rear glass out from tailgate and rears.

Theres not really a way around it. I have read before of people removing it with a stanley blade, could be quite precarious trying this around the rear window de-misting strips though!

/edit - Seems you have a couple of options.

- Glue over the matrix so you can tint on top of an effectively "smooth" surface
- Tint up to the matrix but not over it, put vinyl or paint over the matrix afterwards
- Sand them down
- Leave it as it is.

I suppose if you go really dark on the rears then the vinyl strip wount be noticeable...?
