Windows 10 and the Data Protection Act

No it wasn't, it was because, like apple do with safari, ie came preinstalled and the eu assumed that everyone was too stupid to think about installing other browsers. It has lapsed now anyway..

Indeed. My questioning was about why deuse thought Microsoft being done by some questionable EU Competition Law ruling had anything to do with his statement saying he doubted Microsoft had read or considered the Data Protection Act when drawing up the Windows 10 EULA.

Not entirely true. EU announced they were under investigation for hard baking IE into the operating system which they stated would stifle comeptition, innovation and reduce consumer choice by abusing their dominant position in OS land.

apple/osx was distinctly a minority operating system at that time and hence it could not be said that apple were abusing their position.

microsoft agreed and proposed the browser choice screen which was presented to the user on a fresh retail install.

however, they "forgot" about (read: removed) the choice screen with win7 sp1

to which EU duly reminded them with 5-600 million euro fine.

The major issue with the DPA and microsoft follows the snowden leaks insomuch that a company making use of ms services, stored on a ms server, say in dublin: cannot guarantee data security following the recent USA gov ruling that as a USA company MS must pass on any requested data irrespective of where it is being held physically i.e. in a datacentre in dublin.
