Windows 10 Automatic Device Driver Updates

I'm currently setting up Windows 10 Pro and it seems to be installing device drivers despite me telling it not to. I did this by going to system > advanced system settings > hardware > device installation settings and selecting no, yet as soon as I look for updates it starts installing device drivers. This is so annoying.

How do I get it to just install Windows updates and not any device drivers?

That setting has changed - as I mentioned before not sure if its a bug or intended functionality but it no longer reliably prevents automatic driver installations and only seems to control icons and additional driver related software.

There are a few options with regard to 3rd party software, etc. for controlling it but I'm not upto speed on what works best.

Spent the last two hours dealing with what I honestly believe is the worst implementation of OS updates I've ever seen. I don't to know whether to cry or laugh at how comically bad it is. Why couldn't they have just left it like it was in Windows 7. You still had the same automatic update behaviour, but it was straightforward to disable or simply choose what updates you wanted. Whoever in Microsoft thought it was a good idea to deliver automatic driver updates the same way as windows updates needs to be shot.

Anyway, I reinstalled W10 three times now and I think I got it working the way I want. Firstly I disabled device driver updates in advanced system settings and then disabled automatic updates in group policies. When installing Windows I simply left my network cable unplugged. I then installed all the drivers myself and then ran Windows update, at which point it only installed the windows updates.

However, I still think this is broken because the "group policy" fix only disables automatic updates; it says nothing about what updates are to be installed or differentiate between device driver updates and windows updates. As for the "advanced system settings" setting, it doesn't seem to actually do anything. During my second windows install I had that setting disabled, with automatic updates still enabled, yet windows went ahead and updated my graphics drivers.

As far as I can tell, even though I currently have automatic updates disabled now (in group policy) and the option to update device drivers disabled (in advanced system settings), the next time I manually check for updates it will just update everything it can, including my device drivers so long as it deems they are out of date.

It's like Microsoft spent a lot effort to make an awesome underlying OS, but then employed a bunch of monkeys to **** around with the user interface and make everything incredibly awkward for everyone except your ******** grandma.

Believe me I feel your pain - it is one of the two biggest barriers to me ever using 10 over 7 on systems I actually use.

There is absolutely no reason why they can't put 7 behaviour in, except for being stupidly obstinate, even if the other is default behaviour.

Still having issues with this crappy OS deciding completely on its own and against my wishes that it wants to install drivers by itself. Just now it randomly installed printer driver and software without asking me. I have done the following changes to windows settings, but still no luck:

I don't care how useful it thinks it is, I simply do not want it to install **** without my express permission. Why is this so difficult for Microsoft to understand? Hoenstly it is beyond belief that they think it's acceptable to just go about doing this. At least give the option to not install it, or even to 'remind me later'.

Anyone know how to disable the damn thing completely?

I've noticed unsigned driver files sporadically disappearing from my PC since upgrading to 10. Neither bitdefender nor malwarebytes have touched them so I can only assume Windows did it.

Also noticed certain torrents lose files shortly after download unless they're in a rar.

I'm going back to 7

Yep. Roll back to your previous OS and forget Windows 10 altogether. It's what I did and I don't regret it at all. I have even migrated everything over to Linux (Debian) now, except for a Windows VM just for some games.

I'm really sick of Google and now Microsoft trying to control what I do and mine my personal data. I'm now mostly free and open source and very happy with it.
