Hi,

I recently installed a Targus docking station driver on my Dell XPS laptop. Now windows 10 doesn't boot.

It goes to a black screen with the cursor but it won't go into windows.

I've tried Shift+P, Alt&Ctrl&Del, nothing works.

I can't find an option to restore, in my bios.

Please help!

sorry yes - windows key & P.

Nothing works, just a black screen.

I'm resigned to the fact I need to do a restore and/or system re-install... but I can't even get to a screen where I can do this.

Windows 10 is a joke for this... all I want is safe mode or system restore!

Hi,

Not yet - I guess I'll have to try that. Will I lose all of my data doing that?

making a bootable rescue/restore dvd or USB won't lose all your date

but using the bootable rescue/restore dvd or USB will lose all your date as it'll restore it to factory state

force off the laptop a few times on the boot logo and it should then start the process of booting into automatic repair (i think it takes about 3 failed boot attempts), from there you can then get it to boot into safe mode.

one of the real pains of win10 is getting into safe mode if you cant get to the logon screen!!

F8 key should get you into safe mode, hold and press just before windows loading screen.

Your issue however sounds like windows graphics driver / or computer detecting wrong monitor issue.

Do you have the same issue regardless of laptop in the docking station or removed?

May seem a strange one, but it's worked on my parents Dell laptop, when it comes up with that black screen try closing the lid and opening it again, on theirs it either makes it sleep and wake up or turns off the monitor briefly, and that seems to get it to work. Frustrating I know, seems to happen on certain Windows updates.
