I'm working remotely on a pc that has lost contact with the workgroup computers, it can see them if I use the ip address of the computer in network browser but if i use the name it fails.
Other than a restart (which remotely is a little dicey) is there something i can type at command prompt or a service i can restart to cure this?

Name resolution is provided by a DNS capability. When you say you're working remotely you mean you dial onto a remote PC, not that you are working on a PC remotely (ie, away from the office).

In any case, as I say, DNS is the service here, you need to find what is managing your remote machines DNS (I suspect itself, given its a workgroup PC) and fix that, else, use the IP addresses.

i'm at home controlling a work pc using remotepc, so i'd have the same issue there as here. I know i can fix it by restarting the computer remotly but that seems overkill and closes down all the work i have on the desktop right now.
