Windows 10 deactivated after BIOS update?

Upgraded my motherboard today and unfortunately Windows 10 is now showing as not activated :(

Rung them on UK support number and they gave me a load of crap about having to install windows 8.1, upgrade to 10 and then it should work.

Meh - will try to call them again tomorrow.

Did you upgrade from a retail copy of windows 8.1?

If so tell them you want to deactiviate your windows 8.1 retail key and they will give you a windows 10 key to replace it.

I have already discussed this with them, and have it confirmed you can change any hardware and transfer your licence to windows 10.

RETAIL 8.1 is the key though

That's interesting, they gave me a retail Win10 key but didn't deactivate my 8.1 key, as I went back to 8.1 after a while.

ah cool.

A lot of people have managed to do it this way so they don't have to do the route of reinstall 8.1, reserve, upgrade again.

Just quote the EULA licence transfer agreement and your w10 will be activated in no time haha

I bought the Win 8 Pro upgrade key a while back for about £25 when they had that offer on. I've used it many times to do a clean install of Win 8.1.

Will that do?

OP, is your computer branded?

I once updated the BIOS on a branded laptop (either Acer or Asus). This broke the activation of Windows XP. Phoned up Acer/Asus and was told that Windows' license key was embedded in the original BIOS, and that the update has overwritten/blanked it out. Not 100% sure what we did, but think it was a call to M$ using the license key written on the laptop's COA to get it reactivated.

Now thats what I call service!! - used the built in support app to contact Microsoft for a text chat. MS remote controlled to my PC, did some checks on some txt config files that were in the windows folder then promptly issued me a new Win10 key :)

yaaay - saved me having to reinstall win8, then upgrade to win10 again - thanks for the advice chaps

Just had to lie to Microsoft to get my activation done after motherboard change.

First person said that a motherboard change is too much of a hardware change to get a key

Second person, I had to tell that I updated the bios and I now have a windows 10 key. lol
