Hi... had a quick look through this sub-forum and couldn't seem to find an answer.

Just re-built my PC (specs below) and still installing and testing stuff. So no way do I want to upgrade to Windows 10 yet.

The "get Windows 10" icon has duly appeared. What I should have done I suspect is simply ignore it for the time being. What I actually did was "reserve a copy". I just thought this would give me the chance at some point to upgrade. What it looks to have done, is download the upgrade (OK I suppose) and then promptly started to kick the upgrade off.

It offered me a license to accept, so I just declined this and it appeared to cancel the upgrade. But I noticed in Wndows Update, that it was sitting there as an "important" update. So to try and stop this kicking off again, I "hide" the update.

Question... will this stop it trying to auto update? or will it keep trying to run the upgrade?

PS. Still a little confused as well about what happens if I upgrade my Retail copy of Windows 7! Some folks say "locked to the machine after 30 days", other seem to say that I end up in effect with a retail version of Windows 10. Clear as mud to me!!

To stop the update do the following.

Go find update KB3035583 in your list of installed updates.

Uninstall it.

Check for updates.

Hide update KB3035583.

Run disk clean-up on C:

Clean system files. This can take a while to scan the update files, be patient.

Check Windows Update Clean Up and Temporary Windows Installation files.

Click OK then Delete files.

If you upgrade your retail copy of windows 7 you'll still have that copy to use.

personally i would be testing stuff on windows 10, pointless testing everything on win7/8.1 then upgrading to 10 and finding stuff does not work

Thanks for the replies guys.

Think I'll remove it for the time being (thanks Disco P) and a couple of months down the line I'll upgrade to Windows 10 (though I do take your point chili).

Mind you ... Seems as though there is still a fair bit of contradicting info. flying around though.

i upgraded my new rig last week, like yourself i kept putting it off and looking for reasons not to upgrade it, had a whiskey one night and pressed upgrade, got to admit its the best thing i have done lately win10 runs smooth and have not had 1 issue yet.
