can someone help me. i bought a windows 10 pro key of the bay and it worked fine. now i have retired that computer and put the SSD in this computer and decided seeing as this is a home version i would try stick the pro version on it but after it accepted my code and then downloading and installing the pro version its now saying my version isnt valid... how do i go back to home?

Was windows 10 activated before the upgrade to Pro?

what version of Windows 10 did you buy, OEM or Retail? Retail is the only version that allows you to move it from PC to PC, if its OEM it would have tied the key to the hardware ID of the mobo on the retired PC which is why its stating the key is not valid due to the hardware ID changing.

If you want to go back to home I guess it would be a matter of formatting and re installing home again.

Darn it is was hoping I could just revert it back rather than have to format and reinstall.

This what the product says - Microsoft Windows 10 Pro Professional 32/64bit Genuine License Key Product Code. No mention of OEM or anything.

Was bought in November and used mostly through November. Haven't used it since hence why I thought I may aswell use it on my main computer. And it took the code and allowed the install/upgrade which I thought meant the code worked so was happy to proceed with it. Then 4 hours later while playing a game I noticed the activation message in bottom right of my screen over whatever I was doing.

Also seems the guy that sold me it has been suspended now.

I think it was activated. I had been using it for well over a year and was getting all the updates etc.

Ah - you bought one of those illegal keys.
There are nice and simple tests for buying Windows keys and if they are legitimate:

1. Did you buy from Ebay?
It's illegal

2. Did you just buy a key on it's own?
Almost certainly illegal

3. Did you pay anything less than around £50 OEM or £100 Retail?
It's illegal

4. Were you promised faulty hardware with your purchase?
It's illegal

5. Were you told the company were allowed to sell these keys by Microsoft?
It's illegal

should be able to confirm if you have an illegitimate volume MSDN key using the
slmgr /dli
command see here

if you have the original hard disc, presumably you could boot off of that and extract the OEM key (produkey utility) to use with an install on your SSD.

I don't need pro and tbh I don't even know what pro offers over home version. Just thought because I have it I may aswell make use of it.

Just need to find my home version key now lol. Cba right now will do it soon though if the message pops up again.

Surely it should tell you it's a blag key once you put it in not once you have finished the update and stuff... I had to put it in before it would let me download and install.

seems it is a retail key.

oh well im guna have to dig out my windows home key and reinstall windows i guess. what a chore.

Makes a change with the live chat, last time I had to use that the person on the other end seemed to keep going into control panel moving the mouse around and then closing it and repeating it over and over, eventually telling me I needed a new key. I declined the MS offering of a key and reformatted and it accepted it.

Actually. Even OEM keys can be reused now because the licence is linked to your Microsoft account instead of the motherboard itself IIRC.

Search "windows 10 license tied to account" and you should be able to see how to re-activate the license.
