Someone has asked me for advice. She is just about to start a new job which requires her to use a laptop and as a result, she has just purchased one.

For reasons that I don't understand, her employer insists that the laptop runs under Windows 10 Professional. Her laptop has Windows 10 Home installed on it.

Is there an (economical) upgrade path from Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Professional?

The below link details it:

I would be arguing though that if her job requires a laptop (especially in a certain configuration i.e. Windows Pro) then surely the employer should be supplying it?
This as chances are they need Windows 10 Pro so they can add the computer to the domain which is probably not in your friends interest for her personal use as she will be restricted to what she can access/her permissions

Fair comment but that seems to be the policy.

I gather that it is to do with BitLocker.

To be honest, the only real issue is where she can purchase a legitimate copy of Windows 10 Pro at best price. There doesn't appear to be an "upgrade" option.

The laptop in question doesn't have a DVD drive and the USB version seems to cost £20 more than the digital download version. Can one generate a bootable USB from the digital download version and if so, how?

BYOD type of thing I'm guessing?
Windows store for £99.
I recently had to do two for a client who had gone out and bought two "well priced" desktop machines for use at work - well priced as they contained Home not Pro.

Windows Store. Upgrade from Home to Pro is £99 and it's all done via download. No need to create installation media, you just purchase, download, run and let the machine upgrade from Home to Pro.

Probably . . . no idea what BYOD means?

Do you have a link for this please?

... As the guide in my first post said :)

this, plus various settings may be locked and there maybe a software white list, means she no longer has control over what can be installed
make work supply the laptop

Ref Upgrade from Home to Pro is £99

With reference to Upgrade from Home to Pro is £99.

Are you referring to this:
You are now brought to the Store listing for Windows 10 Pro. Here you can buy the upgrade for a one-time cost of $99. The purchase is made through the Store just like buying a new, game, movie or music. (LINK)
This is actually $99, will this work if you are upgrading from the UK?

Further to the idea of a £99 upgrade, can anyone recommend a 100% reliable, low-cost image backup package? I used to use Ghost and then Acronis True Image.

The store is regionalised I believe, so yes it directs you to the UK £99 version rather than the $99 one. Other than that the process should be the same (I don't have anything newer than Win 7 here otherwise I would check)

Macrium reflect works well and is free for basic imaging.

Just to confirm this is the case - you'll be directed to the UK store where the $99 magically becomes £99.
I'm sure, with some proxy/VPN settings you might be able to trick into getting the $ price - but then you might as well not bother as you wouldn't be licence legal.

We use CloneZilla at work when building new laptop images, no issues so far!
Thanks for that, I will try CloneZilla, I have just read good reviews of it. The laptop in question doesn't have a DVD drive so I guess I will have to produce a bootable USB memory stick for her with CloneZilla on it. Do you by any chance happen to know if this is a CloneZilla feature?

Thanks for the support here, particularly but by no means exclusively to Armageuse & stoofa - THANKS :(
