Dear all,
I am a newbie and would like some help with the following.

I am running Windows 7.
My motherboard is a Asus M5A78L-M usb3
I currently have everything on an 11 year old 250gb hard drive that is partitioned C and D drive.

I would like to upgrade to Windows 10 and have the software (cd) ready to go.

I have bought a new hard drive as well.

I was thinking would I be better install the OS on the new hard drive?

I’ve read that I may encounter problems with drivers for this motherboard. If so would I need to download some drivers first?

Should I format the 250 HD and install from the BIOS?

I’ll have more questions but that’s a good start many thanks.

Regards

Hello!
Since you have a new drive I would be tempted to immediately remove the old drive and place it somewhere safe and just go for it with the new drive and windows 10. Worst possible case is that windows fails installation and then you can go back to the old drive and access the internet to attempt to find out what went wrong. Personally I always try to keep an old drive about with a copy of a known working system for all my PC's. It's really handy when something goes wrong and your PC drive gets damaged.

In future you should also consider using separate drives instead of partitioning. Put your OS on one drive and your critical data on the other. You will find that much safer than everything on one drive. Problem is with partitioning is that all too often if you lose one partition you lose them all, whereas with physical drives you usually only lose one and the other remains intact. Also it tends to be the system drive that messes up leaving your critical data intact. Using that approach can cost as little as £40 for a second drive, which really is nothing compared to peace of mind.

Interesting, I hadn’t thought of that and think it’s a good idea. I’ll unplug that drive and keep it to one side. Then try the installation. Cheers
