I installed Windows 8 on a system a week or so ago, and early on in that installation, after putting in the licence key, I was asked if I wished to upgrade to Windows 10. I did not accept. Can someone who's tried that tell me what then happens? I assume it will try to download Windows 10 from Microsoft, but if I have the ISO of Windows 10, can I use that?

You can use the Windows 10 ISO but please make sure your Windows 8 is activated first.

Well yes, presumably at that stage - when Windows 8 is not installed yet - it's checked the licence key with Microsoft. The installation image I'm using long pre-dates Windows 10.

What is happening is during the Windows 8 out of box wizard it goes and gets updates from Microsoft at which point it will offer to download and install Windows 10.

Yes, so rather than let it take ages downloading, can I point the Windows setup at my already-downloaded Windows 10 install set?

You need to go through the Win7/8/8.1 installed and activated and an upgrade process to Win10 which when finished has also activated before you can trash the hard disk and do a clean install of Wn10. Else you'l most likely end up with an Win10 install that won't activate.

Sure as long as the Windows installation you have just done is activated you can point it at an ISO or installation directory and do an in-place upgrade.

I think we're talking at cross-purposes. I'm aware of the in-place upgrade option, but I got the message - and option - early on during the installation of Windows 8, just after entering the licence key.
