Windows 10 Lag/Stuttering - New Monitor over DisplayPort

Hi All,

I've just been testing out my new LG 27GP950 monitor and am noticing some issues with Windows 10 that I am struggling to pin down. This is the monitor:

Up until now I have always used 2 x 1080p monitors both connected to my Sapphire Tri-X R9 290 GPU, always using DVI. Now I have disconnected one of these monitors and replaced it with the monitor above but this time over DisplayPort. Since changing I have noticed that Windows sometimes sporadically hangs and takes a moment to catch up. During this I can't move the mouse or do anything.

In an attempt to diagnose and just in case it was a problem with the mixed connection types and resolutions I disconnected the second monitor but it still seems to happen with just the new 4K monitor on its own.

Has anyone experienced this type of issue before? I did have some concerns about my graphics card driving this new monitor but not sure if it could be something else?

Any help appreciated!

The Radeon 290 only supports DP 1.2 if I remember, but that monitor is DP 1.4? Perhaps there isn't enough bandwidth for the monitor at the settings you're using.

Could be the issue. Strangely couldn't find a resolution vs frequency chart for the R9 290, but I have a (died a few months back...) MSI R9 290 GAMING, the DP specs for that are:
DisplayPort 1 (version 1.2) Max Resolution: 4096x2160 @ 50 Hz

You might be able to limit the monitors max refresh rate to work around it. Not great for a 144Hz monitor, but might stop the problem you are seeing.

Cheers folks for the feedback.

At the moment I've been trying to narrow it down further... I did have my TV also connected which I had forgotten about and this was via HDMI. Having since disconnected that I haven't yet noticed the stuttering issues during use (apart from on monitor load/switching inputs etc.). Could the HDMI signal have been interfering perhaps?

I did also move the DVI connection for my second monitor into the DVI-I port instead of the DVI-D port. From reading online I'm not sure how much of a difference that would actually make in reality? There was also this that I discovered perhaps indicating that the DP, HDMI and DVI-D perhaps do not work so well when all are connected at the same time?

If this doesn't work then from what you have both said it might be time to look at that new graphics card I have been trying to avoid... My Xbox is driving the gaming at 4K so was trying not to upgrade the GPU if I can get away with it!
