Windows 10 licence transfer

Apologies if this has been asked before.

Is there any way to transfer a W10 Pro licence that was created from a W7 Pro retail key via the free upgrade channel to a new build?

My understanding has always been that it was not possible and a new retail key would need to be purchased, but I've heard some people saying that a transfer is possible?

The license goes with your windows account somehow, like magic

My licence activation status says 'Windows is activated with a digital licence linked to your Microsoft account'

It's allowed. My W10 Pro copy was an upgrade from a retail 7 professional key, and it activated completely fine on my new build. Just put in the 7 key in the 10 installation steps and it'll activate just fine when you're done.

I don't even think you need a key now. You just skip the key bit, choose the version of Windows 10 (Home/Pro) you have the licence for and then it will activate automatically when you log in with your Microsoft account. (Presuming you have the digital licence linked as mentioned above.)
