well, you could argue for the price i would be very lucky to be getting retail for £60.

it was listed as retail, but upon checking the product id when installed, it is, in fact, OEM.

keep it, or get a refund, as it was incorrectly listed?

forgive me if i am wrong, but i was led to believe that you did not know whether it was retail or oem until it was installed.

there was nothing in the sealed packaging that stated if it was "oem" or "retail".

Retail versions come with a USB drive, and OEM versions come with a DVD.

That's the way you tell if its retail or OEM.

Can you post a pic of the usb stick and box?

A quick google suggests demonix is right about retail on usb.

well, this came with a usb drive, and the the product id code has "oem" at the end.

Found this on another site.

When you look at the product ID on your control panel > System and Security > System screen (or right click on computer and select properties) You'll see either a long string of numbers or a long string of numbers with OEM in the middle of it... like

Product ID: 00000-000-0000000-00000
OR
Product ID: 00000-OEM-0000000-00000

At least that's how it appears for my two computers, one of which has an OEM key and the other has a retail key.

EDIT: I just switched to windows 10, and the first part of my product key is 00330 and this is the non OEM version.

keep it, or get a refund, as it was incorrectly listed?

Where did you get it from? If it was here then return it immediately. If it was an amazon marketplace seller return it (its probably a deliberate attempt at deception.) If its eBay then you should be able to return it under Not As Described. The fact you mention "listed" suggests the latter.

what's the point returning it?

it's useless to him now, as i have already installed/registered it to my computer.

he emailed me a few hours ago to say that he can refund me in full, and that i can keep the windows 10 package.

removed.

what would be the point of me putting up a product id that's not real?

this is the product id that is generated once windows 10 is installed, as seen through my computer-properties etc.

NOT the activation key code.

surely even if i accidentally posted the activation key code, no-one else would be able to use it, as i have already used it to activate my copy of windows 10?

if i'm using it, then i assumed no-one else can use it at the same time as me.

Not sure if this was aimed at me because of my post.
I was only suggesting the pics to see if they would show if it was a genuine product. (USB stick and box, not the activation key)

The product ID examples whas just to show the OEM bit should be in the middle of the ID not the end.

I did not mean for you to post any of your actual ID code or Activation key.

I do apologise if this is the case.

no, that's fine freddie :)

i have pics, but the forumj will not let me post them directly?

i'll need to use photobucket, or something.

reading around, i assumed that letting other people see your product id was not particularly harmful in any way.

as for letting people see your activation code, would that still be not that much of a problem, seeing as if you had already used it, then surely no-one else can fruadulently abuse it?

as for the product id code and the oem part:

this is very confusing, as the oem part is at the end of the code list (for me), and not the middle.

i might have to ask microsoft directly, as (so far) i cannot find anything specific googling the issue that proves if that is oem or not :(

Pics certainly look like genuine product.

I suppose if someone used your activation key you may be deactivated once you turn off you PC. (don't know this for definite)

As for the OEM bit i honestly have no idea. My Product ID hasn't got OEM in it at all. Although mine was the free upgrade from Retail 8.1 Pro.

Agree with contacting Microsoft, probably only way to be sure.

i just contacted microsoft's online chat.

they verified that it is indeed oem.

the seller has just refunded me, claiming that they are "baffled" and that it must have been just a 'bad' one in the batch...yeah.

See your other thread. People did warn you.

well, i knew that, but i was not willing to cough up £170 for a poxy retail os.
£60 is fair.

At least you got your money back and a free verified by Microsoft W10.

Could be the whole batch is wrong though.

i think they were completely lying and just going on the assumption that most people wouldn't be bothered to check the product ID after uninstalling.

the majority of people are just happy to have a working copy of windows for less than £70.
