As above i have downloaded and placed win 10 setup on a usb drive, i own an alienware laptop which has a few dell drivers and takes ages to setup, as its all running nice i am rather reluctant to risk installing win10, however i was wondering would i be able to hook up an external drive and install win10 to that, would i then be able to boot from this drive and run win10 that way or would some parts of my laptops main drive still be written too?

cheers

The Windows 10 upgrade is an upgrade. It won't clean install onto a separate drive.

You need to run it over your current install, and it should pick up the drivers fine. But as said, take a backup and then try it.

cheers for the replies, i have found out via google that my alienware r3 will have problems with the windows 10 upgrade and will not be supported by dell, apparently there are a lot of unhappy r3 users out there (old r3 not new r3)
i made a backup using AOMEI backup, however i think for now i will skip the upgrade, i may upgrade my new stand alone at some stage.
