I have a neighbour who, quite sensibly, has got feed up with the pre-installed Norton security package on his PC pestering him to buy add on X to fix problem Y every time he uses it.

What’s a good all in one security package these days which is very simple to use by someone using their PC for basic documents and email?

As his PC isn’t the greatest, something with a reduced footprint and less performance impact than Norton would be advantageous.

Thanks in advance.

Unless they're still using an old version
Of windows
The built in windows security is actually very decent
Nowadays to be honest

If its windows 10 or 11
I would uninstall Norton and use windows own security
Windows 10.

I did say Windows 10 security was way better than it was with XP and 7, but the neighbour is pretty insistant on running a 3rd party package and is quite happy to pay for the privilege.

Is Bitdefender still a decent package? I see reviews from all over the tech sites recommending it, but they also rate Norton highly, a package and company I hate with a passion.

As above Windows Defender is fine for 99% of people these days.

If you couple it with some DNS based malware blocking, then that helps stop the typical malicious links that are often spread via social media and the like.
E.g. to use Quad9's DNS with Malware blocking https://quad9.net/service/service-addresses-and-features
9.9.9.9
149.112.112.112

If he's 100% on a paid application, then ESET NOD32 would be my choice - it's lightweight, reasonably priced and did a great job on my PCs back in the dark old days of XP / 7

It's their choice of course
I just hate to see people paying for something
That's not really necessary

As armageus said
Use a good DNS provider

And Use something like ublock origin in browsers
And windows built in security
Should do the job nicely

And yes bitdefender is still very good
Though how much resources it uses compared to
Eset I can't answer
