Was thinking of upgrading my SSD drive and only have a 1 time only wins 8.1 key which I used already. I'm wondering what I should do?

Get a wins 8.1 disc as cheap as possible to install then when wins 10 comes upgrade for free?

Or

Wait until Wins 10 comes out and do a clean install, but for some reason all they talking about is upgrading free from wins 7, 8, and 8.1. Nothing on wins 10 price on release?

Yes there is. I bought a 1 time only wins 8.1 key very cheap. It wont work twice

What is it, as this doesn't exist.
What do you mean by not work.
Where did you get it from, what is it called.

There's really only two versions.
Pre installed on pre built pcs that are technically tied to motherboard but can be reused.
OEM which can be changed from one computer to another as much as you want.

There are a few others like MSDN but you shouldn't have one off them.

What you've probably done is paid someone on eBay to use one activation of a MAK key. Did you buy it off somewhere that wouldn't be considered a store, and was it very cheap compared to a normal Windows license?

Congratulations, you aren't licensed.

W10 is the platform for the new method for delivering Windows 'versions'. Its being offered for free to get as many people onto it as soon as possible.

Maybe I did. I am licensed. I think these keys were meant for testing, but I check and my system is fully licensed.

Hopeing M$ releases wins 10 free?

it may say it's fully licensed but it's not... same as pirate versions which is what your basically running...

win10 is free for genuine win 7/8.1 licenses/keys

what your using isn't a genuine key/license. if it was genuine you would be able to use it again and again

To get people to upgrade and not hang around on old versions indefinitely like they do currently.

but going by what Glaucus said MS are moving to free os and making money from services...

so if thats the case then why only offer win10 upgrade free for one year?

if MS are moving to free os, then surely they would keep win10 free

No idea, personally I don't see that happening. They'll still charge OEMs, businesses etc for using Windows anyway.

In the keynote they said that o's money was declining and by offering it free they increase money from services and showed the effect of windows bing and free windows for sun 9" devices rising profits.

I would bet the one year free is to get people to upgrade quickly and nit to wait around. And then they'll say it's a great success we've decided to keep the offer open indefinitely.

The only thing we don't know is what will happen foe people with no windows license currently. Maybe a very minimal charge, as far as I'm aware they haven't said anything about these people.

That's what I want to know also. I might wait and see what MS does on Wins 10 release day. I want to switch with a new SSD drive I bought. So might wait until release and hope MS only charges a small fee? Well I should know soon enough. Release is in june.

im guessing the non license users would have to pay. because they already said pirate versions won't be able to take the upgrade offer..

thinking about this offer , they are saying it's a free one-time upgrade then continues to update for the supported lifetime of the device, but if you change the hardware in that device then surely they won't support anymore because it's not the same device hardware it was first upgraded on.
