Had an update today that seems to have totally screwed things up on my machine, it wouldn't boot, then eventually it booted to a black screen, etc, etc.

Anyway have now reset win 10 removed all applications but my start menu doesn't work at all, I click Start and just see the blue circle and nothing happens.

Have created a new user on the account to see if that solves it but it still does the same.

Anyone help?

I remembered had my start menu not worked many time 3 years ago on Windows 10 build 10240, managed to get it worked again by opened Task Manager, clicked Windows Explorer and clicked Restart button at right bottom corner of Task Manager. But 1 year on after maybe Windows Update, software or driver caused start menu and Action Center broke. Tried restarted Windows Explorer through Task Manager didn't worked at all so I tried other methods with SFC /SCANNOW, DISM repairs and reinstalled Windows 10 all failed then I bought 1TB SSD and cleaned installed Windows 10 then everything fine.

About a month ago I installed both USB microscope driver and app, after few hours I noticed my Edge browser closed unexpected but I seemed cant clicked Edge button to reopened, tried start menu but it wont opened, tried restarted Windows Explorer in Task Manager worked but start menu opened with empty Microsoft Store apps. I restarted PC and logged in desktop noticed Edge and Microsoft Store app on taskbar vanished, found out Microsoft Store app was corrupted, googled found a method to reinstalled all default Microsoft Store apps and Edge fixed it then ran both SCANNOW and DISM on PowerShell repaired everything and finally all went fine phew. :)

I suggest you to do below:

1. Try restart Windows Explorer through Task Manager
2. Check if you can open Microsoft Store and apps
3. Open Windows PowerShell in Admin, copy and paste "sfc /scannow" without quote and press Enter
4. Copy and paste "DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth" without quote in PowerShell and press Enter
5. Copy and paste "DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth" without quote in PowerShell and press Enter
6. Copy and paste "DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth" without quote in PowerShell and press Enter

If all above efforts to get start menu work again has failed then you could try reinstall Windows 10 created from Media Creation Tool, if start menu still not worked after reinstall Windows 10 so the only last resort is clean install Windows 10 that will get start menu working properly again.

Thanks for the above, tried it and all checked out ok.

Got it working now.

After removing all applications, re ran windows update and some more updates were applied, rebooted and clicked start to see if it did something, lol and behold I get applications (that's all though,).

Now tedious task of reinstalling everything.
