Im slowly trying to get used to win 10, this tethering problem is driving me crazy and wasting a lot of my time.

I bought a second hand dell laptop a week ago, it had been upgraded from win 8 to win 10, the last owner did a full factory reset. I connected to a home wifi once i got back and i had no issues.

I am having to rely on my phones internet for my laptop and im struggling with tethering. Neither phone worked using wireless hotspot, my laptop connects to my phone but there is no internet.

I have 2 mobiles an old Motorola Moto G and a new Moto G. Both of them were working with usb tethering, now only the old one works with usb tethering and its 3g and slow.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? I did a lot of searching but nothing seems to work, its a very common problem. I followed this guide because the trouble shooter is telling my there are protocols missing. I also removed my internet security software and disabled windows firewall. Nothing seems to work.

Any suggestions guys.

Can't you just use the moto g's in a wireless access point mode so it works over wifi instead?

it's the same, I just don't call it that lol, it should just work or it did the last time I did it....

If you get it working a few things to watch out for with Windows 10:

If the tethering doesn't show as a wifi connection you can't set it as a metered connection.

With the way automatic updates work in 10 you may end up blowing through your allowance if you have a limited mobile data allowance and/or incur data charges - even if its set as a metered connection Windows 10 will sometimes download "critical" updates anyhow.

Sometimes for some reason Windows 10 installs on some system with the option to share Windows 10 updates over the internet defaulted to on which can also use a load of your data.

cheers for the advice, i have disabled the windows update service for now, ill do an update when i get connected to a wifi somewhere. Its a bit rubbish you cant control it the way you could with windows 7. I have the Three monthly rolling contract, unlimited data but with a 30gb tethering limit. I would rather not download windows updates with my allowance from Three.

This morning i could not get either phone to work with my win 10 laptop, tried wireless hotspot and usb, nothing. I then did a system restore to a restore point last week, not both phones work on usb and wireless tethering.

I will monitor anything that might cause this problem again. It could have been a windows update, installing Eset security, installing Airvpn, connecting different phones. At least i know if i restore i can fix the problem.

How strange it looks like Airvpn is causing the problem. As i reinstalled my programs, i did a restore point, then this evening my usb tethering stopped working, Airvpn was the last program i installed, i restored to the time before i installed Airvpn and now usb tethering and wireless tethering are working fine. im glad i only paid for a month of this vpn service. It installs its own virtual network driver, this is messing things up.

Edit - it looks like Airvpn is to blame https://airvpn.org/topic/16249-airvpn-client-bricks-network-protocols/
