Windows 10 Update pain! (Black screen and cursor)

I have an old PC i use for various small server tasks and its been faultless for about 2 years. However yesterday it ran a windows update (the first time ever as id previously stopped them), and now whenever the system boots i only see a mouse cursor on a black screen (no loading sounds, no remote desktop connection) i do see a command promptly briefly flash up for a few frames so something is loading / working but window or the desktop never comes up and ctrl-alt-del is fruitless.

I was planning to boot into safe mode and revert the update but i have no idea how to do this in windows 10 (F4 or F8 dont seem to work). All other advise online to boot safe mode seem to involve getting into windows in the first place which i obviously cannot do.

Any tips welcomed?

Spam F8 just after bios boot.

Install this when you've rebuilt your PC.

I'll give it a go.

Never used it before always used cloud stuff to backup.

It's awesome, it'll create a bootable image, you can use a USB key to boot from to restore it.

You'd typically save the image on a NAS or external disk.

As in an image like what Norton Ghost 2003 used to do years back?
