Had one computer which was being a pain in the rear to upgrade.

Was doing an inplace upgrade from .iso and running the setup from within Windows 10.

It would get part way, do the initial install then restart once or twice but on the subsequent reboot, I would get a blue screen with the PNP Watchdog or the iastora.sys error.

And then after restarting, the PC would reboot into the UEFI with a "image not loaded" message (GA-Z170-HD3P-z140).

Scratched my head for a little while then remembered something from almost every other version of Windows which has caused one problem or another in years gone by...

The SSD Windows was installed to was not connected to the first SATA port (SATA 0).. so I switched drives around and it upgraded without trouble.

I think when installing Windows 10 from 8 on that specific PC, I installed a new drive and simply did a clean install to the drive, in that scenario, all works OK, but when "upgrading" to a Windows install not on the first port it detects, it goes all whiffy and had that on various Windows versions over the years.

Not sure if a motherboard quirk or a Windows one of combination of both but surprised it is still an issue.

Hopefully helps someone has the error messages you get could lead down the path of full wipe/reinstall which might fix it but not needed.

Board quirk. Perhaps something to do with a bios setting or hotplug functionality? Or it could be that intel rapid storage is getting loaded and only supports port 0 on the board or something.
