The ancient server in work had almost died and IT guy has done a runner so its left to a few of us with abit of know how to try and solve the problem.

After failing to load I get a disk error: 00008008
I also once seen it was a driver error somewhere in Sys32, not sure how i got this error message to appear and have not been able to replicate it to find the driver name.

Tried recovering from an old windows 2000 SP2 disk I found laying around but it doesn't seem to be working at all ( probably not server family specific!)

Any help would be appreciated!

If i say restore from backup will your reply be... we dont backup....?
Have you opened it up to ensure it's all connected up ok? Any lights on anywhere indicating an issue.
If the hard disk has gone and it's not in a raid you could be screwed.

Post details of server hardware.

how many users?
is it jsut for file storage?
are you runnng a domain?

Does not seem to be working at all from the disk you found? how so?

email me via trust I'll send you my number if you want a quick chat about the issue

Thanks for the reply.

I've been here 2 years and I was advised we replace the system well before my time and it was ignored ]:(. I don't have the hardware details on hand, I doubt anyone here actually knows them and no, we dont back up. Sounds pretty ******g screwed.

From the sounds of it everything is hooked up OK or it wouldn't boot at all?? I'll crack it open and see if i can get any info on the system

Mulitple users, approx 10 but we all sign in under the same name. File storage is on an external HD connected to the server but the server itself is used to control of equipment/ control software licensing.

mutiple users ok.... same login ok... file storage on external HD ok... CONTROL EQUIPMENT ouch ....

first port of call would be trying to run a chkdsk on the drive, if its a normal IDE drive chuck it in a workstation and do a chkdsk..

I would attack this from several angles,

(dont answer thes questions just some thoughts)

1) get the data visable to the users again maybe jsut share the drive from a different machine,,,

2) get the equipment control workign agian it may be as simple as downloading the software to a different PC and copying over some config files, even if its a dedicated card as long as you can speak to the vendor its probably not that bad.... (jsut install in new machine, install drivers install software)

3) software licensing - not sure thats a service the 2000 server would provide... probably nothign do do or this
