Ok, here is the question.

I am building a new system and want to use Win Professional 7 64 bit upgrade as it is considerably cheaper (my sys does support 64 bit) BUT it is a new system it has nothing on the HD. Therefore in order to upgrade to Win 7 64 bit upgrade I understand that I need to have an existing installation of Win XP already installed. Now if this is correct then no problem as I do have a copy of XP which can be legitemately installed.

Therefore my question is - Before I run the upgrade and do a clean install, must I install XP inorder to get the "upgrade" version to function

New sys will be Asus P8P67 MOBO & Intel 15 2500k CPU

Thanks for any help

Technically you do need to install XP first, however there is a trick you can do where you install Win7 using the clean installation option without the serial code (it will let you do that), you then re-run the win7 installation, choosing the upgrade path and using the serial this time round.

Either way you will need to install a base unit of windows, whether you choose that to be XP or win7 is entirely up to you.
