Just curious if it's worth upgrading? I'm currently on 4Gb but tempted to go 8Gb if anyone is noticing it noticably faster. I never saw the point in running Vista 64 bit on more than 4Gb, can't see Windows 7 being any different.

Windows 7 has a lower resource overhead than Vista so it won't be necessary to add more memory unless you are going to be doing anything specifically intensive, such as video encoding or running virtual machines. :)

Ive got 6gb and ive never seen it use more than 2.5gb i reckon 4gb is more than enough for everyday use, wether 6gb is faster than 4gb i dunno tbh, but ive looked a few times at the ram usage and thought what i waste of time 6gb was......although i do benefit from triple channel mode i guess

Depends what you do with your machine. If you just use notepad you could get away with 1gb but it use big drawings in photoshop then 8gb might be better.

I only really bought 8gb for use with Vista.

Recently lent 4gb to my mum to see how Win7 would run on her old pc before i got her some more memory and i barely noticed a difference even with Photoshop running.

One good advantage of having 8gb is that say you fancy a game of something and cant be bothered to shut down lots of memory intensive programs like photoshop... you dont have to :p

I have 8GB and in normal usage, just web browsing and a few other apps, I hardly see it go above 2 - 2.5GB.

However, I do also work from home and fire up 2 or 3 VMs and a couple of copies of VS then start debugging sessions. When using it this intensely it really comes into its own. For everything else, I think 4GB is more than enough, imo.

As always - if RAM is cheap and money is burning a hole in your pocket then go for it.
The OS will always use as much RAM as you can throw at it.
However as to if it will actually make any difference to the performance - that all depends on what you're doing.

I'm running 12GB of RAM - Do I need it?
No, but it was a bargain I couldn't refuse.

In my usage, when I had 8gb, I never used it, unless running virtual machines.

All I generally do is play games, and I didn't notice any drop in performance at all when I went back to 4gb.

If I had DDR3 tri channel, I'd be running 6gb and not 3gb

I have 8gb and using vista, but I use standby every night so it clears the wasted mem from vista when it comes out of standby. I dont need 8gb but its 1 thing less to wrorry about.

6gb here on 64bit win7 and havent used more than 20% yet

edit: sorry 30% lol its usually running constantly about 20% due to firefox - that silly fox hogging all the memory

Yeah on 7 It's rarely gone above 3GB even with many photos open or Lightroom chunking away.

I'm tempted to take out 2 of my GSkill PC8000 sticks and leave just 2 existing for 4GB and sell 4GB while they are still worth something.

Would also mean I can OC my Q9550 more.

What do people think? :D
