Windows 7 7068 First impressions

Complete twaddle. There's a whole bunch of laptops made by people other than Apple that are smaller, lighter and more feature rich than even the Macbook Air. Take a look at the 10" Samsung NC10 "netbook" for example, runs W7 stunningly well, makes Mac Books look like bloated behemoths and is only £300. How about the Sony VAIO range (especially the "P")?

When I was researching the 15.4" laptop range I found the prices and specs of all the September 2007 laptops, the Macbook Pro was by far the best kit and only £200 more than the comparative dell which weighed more and had no better spec.

I haven't really looked at 2009s lineup but from the experience of my current MBP and looking at the new ones in the apple store I think i'd probably get one of the unibody ones :p

Dell XPS Vs bottom end macbook pro = £63 difference and weighs between .4 and .9 pounds more ;)

Ha, 17" XPS is £400 MORE than the 17" Unibody and the apple has 3-4 hours more battery life! LMFAO.. like it.

Also why does every PC laptop you see have a myriad of lights, I have one. Which tells you if its sleeping or not :/ having 6 blue lights telling you if its charging/accessing wireless/hd/dvd drive is completely pointless and annoying, esp in the dark! Oh and I haven't come across a nicer keyboard than the MBP one and I use a lot of laptops (fixing them lol)

And I haven't come across anything from the PC world which is made anywhere near as good as this Mac Pro case, I have the original Stacker and that doesn't even come close either!!!

I don't think anyone would disagree that Apple make pretty kit. I don't think anyone would disagree that Apple have been successful at marketing in a way that makes some people pay double the price for similar spec non Apple "PC". I also don't think anyone would disagree that if OSX is so good, why do so many Apple users spend so much time dual booting into Windows. ;)

I only boot into windows due to the software my engineering dept is windows only, otherwise I wouldn't bother ;) Time is split 95% OS X 5% W7 atm

Oh and games :p

So, Pretty, overly expensive and still can't do everything you need - sounds like a bargin to me !!:D

I'm kidding....

I do wonder where people get this "cant do everything" thing from.

I've NEVER come across a program to do something on the PC that I can't do on the mac, sometimes the mac version is better and visa versa. Not an argument IMO.

There are strengths and weaknesses to OSX and Windows and that's a good thing, Apple keeds MS on it's toes and vica versa. Without the competition neither company would have to "try" and that would be a bad thing.

Macs are beautiful machines in the main although there does seem to be a stange kind of "snobbery" that comes from a chunk of Apple owners that irritates the rest of the world :D

Well the thing is, I've fixed about 20 computers at uni, all of them were vista. One just one day corrupted something saying "A system process that should never fail has failed"... I say no more :p

And anyway, Im giving W7 a decent chance, its on both my MP and MBP, but im still not going to change, the layout of everything in W7 just isn't as nice to navigate compared to OS X, even tho some people (mac users) think finder is poor :/

Last post on your thread in the OCUK Apple forum reviewing your new £2k Mac on Friday just gone (April 3rd):

Well the mouse pausing turns out to be the keyboard too!

Be it scrolling through a web page, document or itunes there is a pause every few seconds.

Oh and there is a pop from the speakers every so often too.

Currently for a £2k machine? 5/10...

Ahem :D

Yup, its NOT hardware tho ;) Im waiting for 10.5.7 to see if it fixes the issue, but thats still one minor problem vs systems not booting or not usable at all.

I can use the MP but have to keep moving the mouse :p

First problem i've had from any apple computer IIRC. HD died in my MBP but then I did drop it ;)

And 5/10 is actually abit harsh, that was my off day when W7 wasn't playing ball either :p

Oh and the craftsmanship on the Mac Pro case is ridiculous. Its made out of 2-3mm brushed ally. I'd pay £300 just for the case!!!

So basically you're just sucking in the apple mantra "its beautiful elegant etc". The mac pro has to be the dullest looking case ive ever seen, its just a slab of aluminium with an apple slapped on the side and a meshed front. Imo thers plenty of pc cases out there that are miles ahead in terms of looks, access and airflow.

Rubbish. Anyway, back to W7, using it abit more today, a few bugs I've seen fixed like in a open file window double clicking it just made it empty the file name box  so now no more pressing up and down to get to it!!!

Right click (for me on my MBP) is fixed but now I get dodgy blues like its operating in 8 bit color except its 32 bit  weird but maybe a driver issue, see what happens there!

Any ideas on RC1? May?

May at the latest I'd say, It wouldn't suprise me if we see 7072 declared as RC candidate and be available in a couple of weeks.

Ive got this on my main PC (sig) and must say, Im liking it. All the stuff that drove me away from Vista has gone. Not convinced by the superbar yet, but im blaming 7 years of XP for that, rather than the superbar itself being flawed.

Do I now bother to instal this onto my laptop? Its my spare machine for when I cba to get to my pc. Its got a low end C2D in it, gig of RAM and intel GMA 945 onboard graphics, so would give me a good impression of W7 on slower kit, but am I just going to be annoyed with it and wish id kept XP on it?

There's no doubt that 2GB is better but 7 seems to run fine on even low end netbooks. Just don't crank the grapgics all the way up and be frugal with the amount of stuff you have running all the time.

I will be updating tonight, from build 7000 to 7068. :D

I do have one issue that I doubt the will fix though. the Windows + E key in Vista or Xp takes yout o My Computer in W7 it takes you to Libraries. :(

No way to change this, is there?

I installed 7068 last night, my first Windows 7 install. I am really liking it so far but the taskbar stuff at the bottom is confusing me. Is there anyway of locking the quick launch icons?

It seems that when you click on a quick launch icon it loads in that space, even if it is in the middle of other quick launch icons. I prefer how it works in XP so can I get it like that?

I love the speed of the OS though, although I have had some problems in IE8 with pages not loading and general slowness. Overall though I am really happy :)

I have a 2nd HDD with XP on it which is currently unplugged - If I put that back in my machine on the 2nd SATA port, will I default boot to Windows 7 (this is what I want it to do) but still be able to access the other HDD to get some files off it?

Thanks

The whole point of the new taskbar is to kind of meld quick launch with the docks that other OS' use :) Give it time, and you will learn to love it :D If not, I think it's in the options to revert back to quick launch

Cool thanks. I'll give it a bit of time to see if I get used to it first :)
