After installing and updating my Windows 7 install, do i need to download Direct X from anywhere or does win7 even need it?

Its a brand new install and ive come from XP so im a little behind the times.

Thanks.

Ok, but it does need doing

Anything that relies on the newer DX9 files won't work without it

Ie Media Player Classic Home Cinema

"Steam is always installing bloody DX stuff every time I get a new game"

Probably why :)
Win7 is good out the box, but it doesn't come with the latest DX runtimes, so programmes like MPC-HC or XBMC which use more recent than Win7 RC runtimes can run into issues, if they don't come with an SDK installer.

Steam only ever installs DX9 stuff. Which suggests DX10 and 11 is handled by Windows update. Or I have simply not spotted a particular game install newer DX10/11 files.

Meh. :p

If you do a clean install and grab all windows updates you'll still have to run the directx updater. If you don't but install a game that needs newer files it'll almost certainly do it, but there's still the odd case where things won't quite work.

MPC is a good example, metro also threw a fit for me once.
