Windows 7 and Trim ?

So when does the Trim feature kick in ? does it start when the comp has been idle for a number of minutes or is it always on ?
Any information would be appreciated

It's issued any time a delete or format command is given, though not all firmwares respond the same way, I know Sandforce firmwares for example don't use TRIM the same way Crucial or Intel drives do, which is why they don't recover performance straight away after a format.
