Hi

How successful is the included Windows 7 backup utility at restoring images of the C system drive to a new replacement hard disk? I have read that it shouldn't be a problem if the replacement hard disk is of equal or larger capacity.

I ask as i have done a few tests on a working system but have never been prompted to select the destination disk/ partition to the restore the C image to.

TIA

I have read that it shouldn't be a problem if the replacement hard disk is of equal or larger capacity.

This is the case, the Win 7 backup facility will only restore to another HDD of the same or greater size...however, even with this limitation I still find it very good and has been 100% reliable when working within that limitation...

The W7 backup is really only intended for situations where your OS becomes damaged or the HDD itself is toast. It is highly likely you will be restoring to the same HDD or, if a replacement is required, one of similar or greater size. There aren't many people who would replace their HDD with a smaller one. [Of course if you are upgrading to an SSD is an exception].

I have just been playing around with it in a VM and it seems to do its job very well. I too had no option to choose a disk, but I believe it has something to do with the restore process not having the available drivers for the HDD. This may have been a VM issue though!

Does the OP have multiple HDDs and no option available?
