Windows 7 beta - 9th January

OK I've decided I'm gonna give this a go.

What's the size of the 7057 x64 ISO so I know I'm getting the right one?

Ive got around to testing win7 beta on my older pc (A64x2 3800, 4gb ram,a8r-mvp). Seems to work well enough, but it still has same issue as vista64 where it cant address 4gb properly (2818mb). Have to stick to XP if I want to utilise full 4gb on this mobo.

I also noticed that there was no Uli Raid driver included in win7 so had to dig out the driver files from old uli driver pack. (Vista does come with a much newer driver)

Have to say, installing Windows7 from a USB stick is awesome! Up and running in about 15 minutes tops, installed all my drivers as well :)

Although reckon I should download the Intel chipset drivers rather than relying on the Windows default?

How does it run on older machines? I have a 3GHz Northwood Pentium 4 with 1GB in the living room with XP. Mainly used as HTPC and web browsing. Never considered putting Vista on it but might 7 be an improvement?

Ive got it running on an old athlon 2400+ with 512mb ram and a 6600gt. Runs pretty good. I don't have any programmes installed other then anydvd and wiinremote. Its mainly used for websurfing on my telly and watching films. The only problem I have is every time I switch it on I have to reset and do a second boot as it freezes up. After that it works fine. Can't be bothered to find out why its doing it though.

Kinda a noob question, but can I install this on my slave drive and still keep XP on my main drive. If so would I be right in saying I have the options of which to boot up when I turn the machine on?

just want to check so i'm 100% sure. i have installed 7 on a seperate hard drive to which my files are stored on. 7 has seen the other hard drive and allows me to view the files, work files i will be copying to the same hard drive that win7 is on so worst case i'll lose one days worth of work. are the files on the other hard drive safe or as i can see them can they be mssed up too?

Does anyone else have WMP constantly 'updating media library'?

I do, and all it seems to do is fragment my hard drive. What is it actually doing? Can I stop it?

Well I've got it up and running. :)

Got most of my apps installed and everything seems to be working OK. The only problem I had was with Daemon Tools - it just keeps trying to start the install again and again. I can do without it for now though.

Not had any crashes yet either.

Feels a bit snappier than Vista, but that's probably mostly down to it being a fresh install.

Not sure on the new taskbar yet, but I'm sticking with it to see how it goes. I'm a bit disappointed I can't have the classic start menu though.

All in all I'm pretty impressed so far. If I didn't know better I could probably accept it as the final release. :)

yeah I get that. Left it running all night last night and was still "updating" this morning!!!!

WMP seems to be a bit of a nightmare tbh. Tried for ages to stream my music and video last night (which are on a separate drive to the OS btw). Although I'd enabled streaming, no files were picked up in the remote library by my laptop. Ended up enabling sharing as well and they appeared. Bit surprised you need to do that as you'd think that enabling streaming would show the files???

After checking this morning exactly what it's been trying to update on the main pc, seems that the media files listed were being accessed through the network so they were looping back through the network rather than accessing the drive directly. A quick change of the default My Music folder and all seems well. However I'm not at all convinced about the benefits of virtual folders or whatever MS is calling them.....

Use Virtual clone drive dude, much better than Daemon Tools :)

Is there a different program that I can use other than WMP?

I wish I could still use Musicmatch, that was my fav, but I could never get it to work in Vista
