Windows 7 - Black Screen + Cursor

Hi,

For some reason my PC restarted and now it won't boot into Safe Mode or Normal Mode properly. Once it's done the loading I just get a Black Screen + Cursor.

I've put the Windows 7 disk in and started the recovery mode and tried to look for any errors but it never found any.

Any ideas what to try next?

system restore from windows 7 os disk ?

on the black screen, hold down the shift key and see if you get the sticky keys beep (or see if sticky keys starts up) - if either happen then it looks like the old black screen of death (mostly seen this on vista.)

Does ctrl+alt+del do anything?

Does booting in vga mode make any difference (vga driver issue perhaps?)

What was the PC doing/running before the reboot? Any chance you may have picked up an infection? Maybe run a scan over it with a kaspersky rescue cd ?

Past experience of this (with no boot to safe mode) generally has led to either repair installs or full reinstall of windows. Hopefully someone else will have other suggestions for you before going this route.

Seems to be related to a certain Windows Security update on some machines. I have had a couple of clients with the same issue.

Only way I have found to fix it is to use system restore and then disable the offending update.

Will have a look this evening.

- CTRL ALT DEL doesn't work

There also doesn't appear to be any system restore points.
