hi

im having problems with my windows 7 laptop , eveytime i turn my computer on it takes an age to load the user password screen and when i login it just has black screen ?

ive tryed waiting over 15 minutes but nothing comes up but at first the busy light is on for a while but even after that stops flashing i still have a black screen?

anyone know what it could be?

thanks

thanks , ive read a lot about this doing a google and i think there is a fix ?

as for the repair disc will the recovery discs i created when i first got my dell laptop do the same thing?

Not quite as they will return your machine back to how it was when you first got it. The recovery disk im on about it is to boot the machine into a recovery console with options to do a 'Startup repair' or 'System restore'.

Could be caused by any number of things to be honest but it's not a common problem I wouldn't have thought. If you download a recovery disk from that link I posted and burn that, you can boot your laptop with it and try the startup repair. That would be my first port of call. If that doesn't work then try a system restore.

So you have burned the ISO image to disk? Now you need to enter the BIOS and tell the laptop to boot from the CD instead of the HDD. You normally see a prompt telling you which key to press in order to enter the BIOS when you first power on the laptop. It will say something like 'Press xx to enter setup'. Then look for the first boot device and change it to the CD/DVD drive, then save changes and exit. Don't forget to change it back when your finished :)

I'm not sure why it'd take ages to boot. I'd boot it into safe mode and check the system/application logs. Here's an idea - boot it up and attach an external monitor. Maybe it's switched to use the external port only? Or, boot it into safemode and either system restore it to a few days ago or remove the display driver (it'll use a basic driver until you reinstall a proper one).

when did this problem occur? I'm wondering whether something has been installed which caused it?

If that's the case then you can access system restore from Win PE (the boot disk) and restore your PC to that point :) this is of course providing you haven't turned system restore off

hi again

well i can now say that my laptop is completly screwed and i feel like throwing it out the window:mad:.

My dell 15r has hardly anything installed on it and was working fine yesterday and i had not installed a thing on it for weeks.

ive tryed the factory restore using my created dell dvds that i done when i first got the laptop , but that seemed to hang half way into the reinstallation.

now i have nothing.

what do i do to get dell to sort this out as its under warranty still?

thanks for the help anyway guys , im just so frustrated:(

think i may have found the possible cause.

In bios there is no info of the hardrive plus running diognostics fails the hardrive test saying no hardrive found?

contacted dell today ,they said they will get a engineer out tomorrow for me to replace the drive and install operating system?

did not know they did this , hope they dont charge me anything considering my laptop is only 2 months old:confused:

dell arrived and changed my hardrive and installed a clean copy of windows :)

so much better without all the bloatware that was on it when i got the laptop.

i only have about 8 things installed in the add/remove programs.

top quality service from dell , until now i never relised they had a callout service.

A mate had this on his Lappy tuther week, The only way i could fix it was to install Vista Ultimate & use the Repair console in Vista, Once Vista was installed it fixed itself on instal & worked perfectly, Then we installed Win 7 over the top. Laptop is perfect again.

If i remember corrrectly it was something to do with a corrupted BOOTMGR file or summit.

That's all i know anyway, Hope it helps.

EDIT.
Just read your last post. :D
