Hi,

I was just wondering if anyones' got any idea what about how to fix this before I resort to reinstalling (which I'd prefer not to do).
Last night I installed the lastest 'critical updates' which turned out be a bad idea because afterwards the computer just on the 'shutdown' screen and I eventually just had turn off the power.
Now today, it won't get beyond the 'welcome screen' - which then sometimes just goes black,in normal mode.

I managed to get in in safe mode and tried undoing the update changes. This made no difference and now it won't even boot in safe mode.
After reading a few other forum posts I also tried turning various things off and rebooting and also creating a different account - with no effect.

I ran memtest86+ which was fine and WD disk diagnostic tool which also reported no errors and I can get in using a bootable a linux disk ok to copy off anything I need if reinstallation is necessary.
I haven't made any recent changes apart from adding one of the MSI 5850s from here before christmas, which seemed to be working fine apart from a few driver crashes from overclocking experiments.
Any ideas?

Thanks

Simon

Get your Windows 7 DVD and boot from it. During the set up you will be asked if you want to repair your PC. Try the tools/options. You can also perform a repair install.

I highly recommend you backup anything before attempting anything.

Thanks,

unfortunately, I've just read that if you've got an older installation disk, you can't repair as updates mean that the installed version is too different. I got an error message that basically said that when I tried to repair from the disk.
Sadly I guess its looking like a new install is going to be the easiest option.
