I've recently installed a clean and legit and activated copy of Windows 7 on my PC. I click on Windows update and check for updates and it says "Checking for updates" but it doesn't find any after several hours.

Also, devices such as printers do not automatically download their drivers over Windows Update.

I've tried LAN and Wireless connections. I've tried a Windows Update Service resetting BAT file thing and the microsoft fix.it file. I think it might be a network thing rather than a Windows thing.

Does it actually say it can't find updates?

Make sure the system date and time is correct.

Windows update seems to be getting a hammering at the moment and looks like they've either slid older OSes onto a lower priority channel or just not bothering with maintaining it very well or something (maybe even trying to get people into going to Windows 10 out of frustration or something :( ) it can take hours and hours for it to do anything when trying to get Windows 7 updated - especially if its a clean install from older media that lacks newer service packs, etc.

No, it just stays on "checking for updates" for several hours and doesn't download any. It's been like it for a couple of weeks (it is at my parents house so I try to make it work whenever I go down every two weeks or so) so I don't think it is a recent thing...

Its broken/hit or miss and a nightmare which MS cba to fix properly to force users onto Win 10

I reinstalled the UK retail Win 7 x64 Ultimate last week after a blown motherboard. Could not get any Windows Updates until I started to mess around with various fixes.

Try these:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/mats/windows_update/en

Update the Windows Update agent itself by downloading (after finding it on the web): WindowsUpdateAgent-7.6-x64.exe

Find on the web & download then run these MS fixit's:
MicrosoftFixit.wu.RNP.Run.exe
MicrosoftFixit50123.msi

If none of these fixit for you then I have no other suggestions. I fixed it for me I got 216 Updates (1GB worth on a fresh Win 7 x64 install) which takes about an hour to download/install on a fast PC.

As a last resort go here & download their free app which will find & download all Windows Updates from MS servers you can then attempt to install them via the same app but its a time consuming process as the app insists on hash checking all data from MS to ensure its legit!
