Windows 7: Changes listed since beta for the RC

I just said I'd installed it in place of Vista on the laptop. I find it pretty much the same to use, also finding performance pretty similar. Maybe I could run some synthetic benchmarks and it'd look faster, but for what I use and the games I play, it seems the same.

It would make perfect sense to stick with Vista for a few more years yet, it's still going to get updates and it's still a fast operating system.
I quite like some of the changes made to ther look of Windows 7 but based on what I've seen so far, I wouldn't recommend a move from a well setup Vista install to it.

Read today that Microsoft are going to make a big push to get Windows 7 released in time for the coming Christmas.

I've had a play with it on my VM machine and it is pretty nice to use, not too sure if I'll make the switch as soon as though as I've only just jumped onto the Vista x64 bandwagon 6 or so months ago.

Quick off topic Q: What Nvidia drivers do people use for the Windows 7 beta? I can't get the latest Vista ones to install

^for what hardware

all my vista drivers have worked, some i had to extract first, then point at in device manager. others i had to tick 'vista compatibility' on the exe when running, like creatives

IE is still rubbish, locking up on every 3 websites!

I have found this too, sometimes a site that has been open in a tab for a while will just lock. This takes out all instances of IE running on the machine but luckily it will restore the session on reopening. Also remember that Windows 7 is also running IE8 beta and not the newer RC1 version.

The thing that does my head are the people who a. bash Vista something rotten and b. think Windows 7 is the best thing since sliced bread. You don't see it so much on here but on other sites its rampant.

These guys have been using XP and have decided to try out the Windows 7 beta and discovered it's actually quite good, "oh it's so stable", "it's so fast" etc. Well, newsflash guys, some of us have been enjoying this with Vista SP1 for ages.

The reality is Windows 7 is standing on the shoulders of Vista, and unfortunately it looks like Vista is going to be unfairly consigned to history as another Windows ME.

i dont completely agree with that. ive been using vista for as long as i could - vista drivers for my 800gtx where a shambles on release and took about a year to get up to speed from memory - and i an genuinely excited about windows 7. it IS that much better than vista. while it appears to be similar in operation, enough has gone on under the hood to make it a thoroughly better experiance all round, from loading/shutting down times, to moving around in windows in general - its all very much quicker and instant in windows7, even in beta. The changes to the ui - the keyboard shorcuts, being able to dock/maximise and minimise windows just by dragging them is a long over-due feature but one that makes such a difference onces you start using it. ive now got beta on both my laptop and my htpc. my laptop dualboots with vista and i've used it once since beta's release, and that was only because my usb floppy drive doesnt work in 7 which is a known problem.

You will find a lot of people in the same position. yes you will get people who stuck with xp saying 7 is great - it is. but at the same time, your going to see a lot of people saying the same thing when they are using vista. windows 7 is a REAL step forward and like other people in this thread, i will be buying it. The first time ive ever bought a retail copy of any operating system, i might add:)

Thank God for that! I've been looking for ages to see if the default behaviour of Win+E could be changed back to open My Computer, good to see MS have seen sense!

it can be changed right now in beta with a registry edit :)

i do like windows7 and will buy it, but being on vista sp1 i see no real rush, so i will sit back and wait for a bit as i hope to buy a new pc in Jan/feb 2010 anyhow and will time it with that.

Without a doubt i will be purchasing this soon as its released, been stuck on XP for far too long... Considering using the RC soon as i build my PC :p

How does that make sense? Vista is slower than Windows 7.

Vista is lightning fast on my PC, I can't imagine I'd notice any speed increase, everything happens instantly as it is. 7 doesn't offer any extra functionality that I'd use, and it doesn't look any better. If it was free I wouldn't say no, but I'm not going to pay for it.

I'll be sticking with Vista until I get a new Pc in about 5 years

Same here. I dont really see any point im moving to win7 on my current sys, cos its nice and fast, stable and runs everything perfectly even my x-fi card. PPl saying I should change cos its faster, but is win7 any diff then vista on performance wise, if you havd a good spec pc with loads of mem?

Theres 3 things ive notice about win7 that I dont like, and they are..
1 It automatically creates a 2nd partitpm on install
2 no classic startbar:p(yeah I know im still in the dark ages)
3 when windows are maximized you can still see though the window bar.

Hmmm, although it probably is fine for some people, I'd be extremely annoyed if I found out it wouldn't work with certain games/software/drivers yet.

na that is fair point, like i said i used it on my laptop, but i would not run a beta on my main rig as it is stable as anything setup the way i like it.
