hi there

ive just checked my windows 7 defrag program and it says it on a schedule run at 1am every wednesday in the morning but as i dont have my pc on it does not run , ive took it off the schedule runs , but what i would like to know is how often should i do the defrag ?

thanks

just bought o&o defrag 12 love o&o since version 7 it now has no less than 8 defrag levels

which is important since your data files should be stored differently from your program files

it also can stop stuttering in games and films

Use O&O Defrag here. The built in W7 is the best stock one yet but still is no match for a good 3rd party program.

Does a 3rd party defragger really make any difference than the Windows 7 one ontodays sata drives? With built in cache hard drives have now.
I'd say "no" - despite all the weird and wonderful "optimising" schemes promoted by vendors of third-party defraggers, to my knowledge there's absolutely no hard evidence that they actually make a PC run faster than the built-in Windows utility (and if they don't do this, then what's the point?)

It really depends how and what you use your pc for. My main use for o&o is the "complete/name" defrag which organises files by filename. This is invaluable to me for playing flight simulator as i have a lot of addon photoscenery for it which comprises of thousands and thousands of individual files which can take a lifetime to load into the sim. They're also so large in size that the hard disk cache is virtually useless.

For a general gamer or user though, there's probably not much difference over the stock defrag.

^^ this

I too use FSX and find that having FSX defragged by name stops blurries and glitching in the SIM. The new version also sets up your files in the same partition by zones.

Starting with Windows in the first zone then small freq used programmes in 2nd and large data files at the end. It also montiors and rearranges the files when you add them to your drive this does reduce the performance slightly but not too noticable but keeps your windows install from bloating up too much. It also does a defrag when your PC is sitting idle so if you go away for 10 mins it'll start a defrag.

The main reason I use a 3rd party defragger is because it can runs automatically in the background, when the computer is idle, so i don't have to remember to run it or schedule a run.
