W7 arrived this morning installed to Intel G2. Everything ok until it started downloading updates. It froze at a black screen. Windows Repair had no effect. I could'nt even start a DOS wiper utillity.

I disconected the SSD, installed W7 onto my WD drive. Re-connected the SSD, Windows recognised it and offered to Format it. Did so, disconnected the WD tried to instal to the SSD, The installation routine could not see any drive.

I have been using this SSD for the past couple of weeks with RC 7100. Heeelp!

Things break, unlikely to be formating that'd cause it but then again if it was going to break, that's when it'd do it!

Have you tried running Win7 on the WD drive and plugging the SSD back in to see if it shows up? To me it just looks like Win7 can't see the SSD to install onto, not that it's broken.

unless its a virus

But then that's typically only BIOS on motherboards.

Flashing I suppose is sort of installing though. :p

I guess it's theoritcally possible that the install did kill it, in that the physical work the drive needed to do overloaded what was already a weak / faulty unit and made it malfunction.

Things break, I don't blame my doctor for my car breaking on the way to an appointment - that's essentially what the OP has done with Win7.

From the description it simply sounds like Win7 can't see it as a boot drive to install onto, might just be how it's been formatted.

I can see it via Win7 an the WD drive, it shows up as 100MB only.

in disk management mick can you reformat it or repartition it at all? The fact that it shows up and you can see it with any size at all is encouraging.

Tried seeing if it available under xp? Then you could remove the partitions and start again. I have had some issues with my ssd under 7 today, which I have just managed to iron out. Also, have to tried installing onto the SSD with only the SSD connected, no other hard drives?

Sounds like it's un allocated and maybe error in format.

Try
Right-Click on the “My Computer” icon either on your desktop or in the Start Menu and select “Manage.”

A new window titled “Computer Management” comes up.
Select “Storage” from the left hand side by clicking it once, then select “Disk Management (local)” from the right side by double-clicking it. Find your new drive and format it with one large partition.

Sounds like the file systems messed up here, hence the 100mb. I'm not sure about all file systems, but I do know that some write the drive size in the first sector (I'd assume they all do). This is how people sell 1gb flash drives on the net and say they are 8-16gb, by changing that peice of data.

Try formatting with some of the various tools around, I can't suggest any though because I do all my formatting on Linux

I can fromat it. I can wipe it with HDDeraser. It shows in device manager as working properly.

Edit: I can see it in Device manager but not when I open 'Computer' from the start menu.

Edit: By using XP I've managed to get the 74GB partition back. I have wiped it and reinstalled Win7. It blackscreened at the same point as last time (updating the ATI video drivers) a safe mode reboot seems to have sorted it out. I'll carry on as normal and if it barfs again will RMA. Thanks for your help.
