Windows 7 doesn't auto start ext drives anymore

I am not sure whats changed on my laptop, it always used to auto open usb drives or at least give a prompt asking if i want to open them, now i dont get either now.

I have gone to control panel > auto play and tried to restore defaults but it's never worked or got me back to my laptop even giving a prompt.

Can anyone help at all?

Did you restore defaults with or without the USB drive attached?

It was removed, I have also tried changing the registry settings for the nodrivetypeautorun to Dword 00000091 but thus hasn't worked either. I'm not sure if some software is doing the auto play or not :-(
