My fried recently decided to build a Core 2 Quad Q9400 set up, now I thought he had bought a new ddr3 motherboard but it turns out he bought a refurbished ddr2 motherboard as he had bought the parts bit by bit over time (as advised by another of his friends). Now windows 7 will not install via DVD drive he tells me, something about drivers? I will have more info tomorrow but I have a few questions.

1)any chance windows will install from a USB Drive?
2)could the motherboard be faulty in some way?
3)what drivers could be missing?
4)could it be to do with the BIOS?

thanks in advance

mobo coule be faulty yes, specially if its a re furbed unit.

if you doing a fresh install of windows there won't be any drivers installed.

is the cd/dvd drive set as the first boot device in the bios ?

windows 7 should install easily... i have installed it on windows xp machines that are 6 years old or more and it runs fine...

it could be a driver issue... windows 7 has hundreds of basic drivers installed into it and it usually installs all drivers for you i.e. video, audio and chipset etc, but if the board is missing drivers it could be a problem..

Same I'm pretty good with building machines and doing windows installs and the like but i have never come across this issue before as I said until I get to see what drivers windows 7 is talking about I cant do anything I'm going to have a look tomorrow afternoon.

And basically he said the menu comes up to install windows but when he gets to a point it says there are drivers missing and it wont install, and yea I told him to check the boot order he said everything was in the right order. If I can't figure it out its windows xp or vista for him

Having the Windows 7 install disc image on a USB stick makes life a lot easier. When I put W7 on my USB stick I just searched and found a guide.

Is he pressing any key to install drivers, because of 1st thing that comes on screen at boot? Cos that is just 4 raid drivers & you just ignore it.

Sounds like the classic "cd/dvd device driver missing"

I have three disks - two of them do this, one of them works fine.. do you have another disk you could try? Or try ripping the disk to USB and booting from that

Also - I'm 99% sure they were burned from the same ISO... maybe it's the DVD types I used? Not sure...

OK went there yesterday with a batch of new DVDs and a USB with win 7 on it, first tried win 7 but did not load up, restarted this time it loaded up fine but got stuck after the 1st screen for about 10 mins at this point I was puzzled. so I restarted went to BIOS went to dive options it was just set to SATA which i thought yeah everything is fine but there was another option of PATA+SATA which shouldn't make a difference as he is only using SATA drives but I thought what the hell lets give it a try. Then restarted PC started Windows 7 via DVD and it installed no problems.

Now even though Windows installed fine I am still puzzled as to what the issue was?
as I do not think changing that setting in the BIOS had any effect

sounds like it had problems accessing the drivers for the drive, sry can't think what there called, but there normally associated when used in achi mode.
