Hi guys,

Looking to upgrade my girlfriends laptop as shes running Vista SP1 and when she runs the The Sims 3 it batters the system and it generally runs pretty poor (indicative of Vista in general from what i remember of it).

When i was back in university 3 years ago i bought a Windows 7 educational license for £30, was wondering if anyone has any links for this nowadays as i cant find anything online apart from Office 2010 educational discounts?

Shes at Oxford Brookes if it helps.

Cheers,
Sam

an upgrade of windows isn't going to solve that. windows 7 is pretty much the same as vista under the hood. 7 has just got a few bells and whistles that make it look shinier. the only reason vista got a bad rep is because of the poor driver/software support from 3rd parties when it was first released. it was so different from XP that it took awhile for everyone else to catch up. when 7 was released, all vista drivers just worked without any need for major re-writes.

i reckon you'd be wasting your money if the game struggles that badly on vista.

I know what you mean; but from personal experience Win7 manages its memory/cpu usage much better (might just be a placebo effect though!) :)

As above - Windows 7 won't really improve the game performance.....but, FWIW try software4students ?

I get free windows 7 licence keys from my UNI because they are subscriobed to ELMS, part of the Microsoft academic alliance program, if the uni is registered (Being oxford brookes I'd imagine it is) she can probably get it for free if she speaks to one of her technicians for an elms login.

Probably best off spending the £30 on more ram or at least put toward it. Also, do a full format with a windows disk, not the one thats included with all the crapware on it.
