Pc booted fine earlier, but hung when reading a CD. Waited a while but ended up having to reset the machine, which hung on boot. Powered machine off, rebooted. when it reached the login prompt I recieve an error:

"Windows Logon: LogonUI.exe - Entry Point Not Found"
"The proceedure entry point (then an up arrow symbol) could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.DLL"

If I ok the message a few times I get a login screen, but after entering my password I simply get a black screen with a white cursor. No toolbar or icons. Unable to get the start menu up. I can bring up Task Manager, but if i try to run any programs it hangs and prompts to close. The program either doesn't run or errors when it attempts to.

Unable to run any software from a USB drive to search for viruses as it either doesn't detect it or prompts to install a driver which I'm unable to do.

Last known working & Safemode both give identical errors.

One odd thing I've noticed is Task Manager processes show the username as an asian symbol rather than my login.

I really need the data on the drive, so don't want to simply format & reinstall. Guess I could attach the drive to my sons PC to salvage anything i need, but was hoping I might be able to fix it.

Spent ages on the Net looking for help but no joy, thought I'd pick you brains before moving the drive.

Cheers for reading!

hm...sounds like the dll's been corrupted somehow. Suppose you could try copying over an existing KERNEL32.DLL, but honestly when you're that close to the core of the O/S, a full reinstall's really the best way to go.

(you could do a repair install before doing the full job, having backed up essential stuff. That should restore system files).
