Windows 7 Failing to Install?

Hi all,

I'm trying to fix a Dell Dimension E520 for a friend. It had WinXP on it which apparently worked fine until about 3 months ago, after which it would only start in safe mode. If you tried to start it without safe mode the WinXP logo would show, then it would automatically reboot.

He's already bought a retail copy of Windows 7 Home, I assumed it was just a software problem so I tried to install Win7. Unfortunately after reaching the final stage "completing installation..." it rebooted and showed an error message (I've tried installing several times with different DVDs but it always fails):

"The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install Windows, click "OK" to restart the computer, and then restart the installation"

I've run 10+ passes of Memtest86+ and a full WD HDD diagnostics, both of which show no errors. I also installed Ubuntu to test, which seemed to work fine.

Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this? Thanks in advance.

Where is this DVD from? Is it a genuine copy?

Assuming you've downloaded/ripped it from a legitimate source, verify the hash of the image and when you're burning it make sure you verify the disc as well.

You've done what I would have done by checking the RAM and HD, signs are pointing to the Windows install media at the moment.

sounds like a gfx problem, either that or mobo. Ubuntu may have worked becuase it wasn't loading gfx drivers. Sounds like xp and win7 both fail when attepting to install the gfx, which would also explain why winxp only works in safe mode.

Thanks for the reply, I've tried two genuine retail Windows 7 discs, and an MDSN image (+ hash verified) from disc (& USB stick). Same error every time.

Thanks for the replies, I grabbed the .dmp files:
