it has done it for a while randomly but it just did it 3 times in a row and i'm getting worried/annoyed. it gets to the desktop, starts loading system tray icons and then just freezes and needs a hard reset which i hate doing. any idea why this would happen? i can't think of any program it is trying to load which would cause it- it always seems to freeze when trying to connect my internet (the little blue circle spins around the mini monitor and then stops).

test your hard drive with hdtune either in safe mode or on another pc if you cannot get your pc to boot

oh nono like i said, it is a very random thing. it will either not happen for 2 weeks, or twice in a row. it's not like i change anything between those times so i don't really understand, also makes it very hard to "test"

Error codes/dumps would be most useful, however if a machine crashed fired the network adapter the first thing to do is update that driver, it could simply have become corrupt. Also hit the windows key and type reliability, open the reliability monitor and see if any events have been logged.

Assuming drivers didn't fix it then Memtest.

If that clear then Disk Check. Start with number 5. Bad sector scanning takes hours, so run it overnight if you do.

Random crashes every few weeks/months are almost always a sign of bad memory, but HDD can cause the same issue.

huh, never knew about that report. well the only event it logged was that windows wasn't shut down properly- obviously as i had to force it. i would hope it isn't my memory, i didn't spend a grand on a massive machine to have problems with that ^^ i'll try some of these tests and stuff, see what they bring up.
