Windows 7 freezing, new install

Hello.
I recently bought a new motherboard (MSI h81m-p33) and CPU (intel G3258) and have reinstalled windows 7 home premium 64 bit.

It worked ok for about half an hour, but then froze, there was no error message, the screen just froze and the mouse and keyboard became unresponsive (red light on the bottom of the mouse also went off).
I could force shut down and restart, but each time I restarted, it would freeze sooner, after around a minute.

I have tried re installing around 5 times, tried installing motherboard drivers from the CD, not installing them at all and installing them from the website while in safe mode, but there was an error and I couldn't do that. (not that I am even sure if it is anything to do with drivers).

I'm currently in safe mode with networking and there is no sign of freezing.

Is anyone able to help with this problem as it is getting very frustrating.

Many thanks,
Matt.

have a look in event viewer and see if there is any error messages in there which may help narrow down the issue.

I've had a look and there are quiet a lot of errors for CAPI2:

does that mean anything to anyone?

not sure if that was the cause of the freezes, there is some other stuff, is it worth posting that aswell?

Also would I be right in thinking that as it seems to be ok in safe mode, then the hardware itself is probably ok?

if there is any other errors post them too please.

might be ok as windows update will not be running in safe mode.

disable windows update and then try the system normally and see if it stops the freezing.

It has now frozen in safe mode. I disabled windows updates in normal mode and it froze again.

I've had quite a lot of errors:

I'm starting to think it might be a faulty motherboard :(

can you list your PC specs please.

try running sfc /scannow in command prompt as a admin. will check windows files for any issues with files

motherboard: MSI h81m-p33
CPU: intel pentium G3258
GPU: nvidea 8800 gts 512
SSD: kingston ssdnow v300 120GB

all other HDDs currently dissconnected.

The scan did not find any integrity violations

try running memtest, this will test the memory for errors and make sure there is no hardware faults with the ram

might also worth doing a smart test on the SSD to make sure there is no errors on there as well.

Before I do those tests, it might be worth mentioning, I used to have this PC with an AM3 motherboard with an athlon, everything else was the same running the same windows with no issues at all for 2 years (apart from the ssd, I got that around christmas)

and you have done a clean install of W7 as well so that would wipe out anything left behind from the previous mobo and cpu

what cooler are you using? is it the stock one or a after market one? make sure this is not done up too tight of its a after market cooler, try re seating the ram and two power cables to the motherboard (24 pin and 4 pin connections)

All tests came back clean. reseated ram and power cables, still freezing :(

I've got a coolermaster hyper 212. I've already tried reinstalling that, hwmonitor reports both cores around mid 30s

I'm losing hope with this.

mmmm strange issue, I know its a new mobo but try a cmos reset or make sure the bios is up to date.

if its using a ssd make sure the sata ports are set to achi as well.

No problem, once bios updated make sure sata ports are set to achi as it may default to IDE and you may get boot issues if not changed

Also make sure the cpu and heatsink are correctly installed, you should not need to update anything it should work from default. But try running with the bare minimum hardware installed if still no joy RMA.

Little update if anyone's interested, I sent back the motherboard and got an Asus h81m-plus.
Got everything running for about half an hour then got the same issue. Looks like I'll have to send the cpu back and try another one. :(

Get into the bios and look for voltage readings to see if they are stable.

The name Chieftec doesn't exactly scream quality to me; I'd suspect that before I look at the CPU personally. Do you have a spare PSU per chance?
