Windows 7 goes touchscreen - video

There's nothing in that video that would make my life any more productive.

For a start, I like my monitor to be upright and at eye level at the back of my desk. To do something I don't want to have to reach over to it and start poking the screen.....and I certainly dont want my monitor to be below eye level and angled 45*. Hello neck pains.

about bloody time, wouldn't mind being able to drag windows out of the way on the desktop like shuffling paper

You can do that now....with a Mouse.....and it doesn't require a screen that costs you a fortune.

or having 2 mouse cursors lol

What for? I can't think of a single time ever thinking "Damn, if only I had an extra mouse cursor...".

Still don't see any added functionality or increased productivity out of it. Resizing images in real time is cool and all but for people to get really excited there needs to be other types of features demo'ed tbh.

This seems like more effort to do simple tasks. I'm already a lazy person. I can't be bothered to lift my hands!

It's long been known IMO that this is what Windows 7 is all about.

I think Microsoft are going to have a hard time convincing people to use their PC's in this way.

I don't like a single finger mark on my screens. They have to be absolutely spotless or I get the jitters!

It will certainly be useful in kiosk type deployments but I really can't see IT Pro's et al using this.

I do - I see it as the future of the PC. In fact, it's an inevtiable evolution.

People will not type forever, it will be an outmoded skill in a few decades. However, you and I are from a different generation and it will take a lot of people time to adjust.

Typing is not an instantly easy thing to do - it can take years to learn how to do it quickly - which is why I believe that voice recognition will also become the norm in a few decades. The growing generations will be able to use their computers quickly and instantly through voice recognition and touch screen computers. As well as being easy to do, it also reduces the chance of getting RSI.

No I agree the speech recognition will be awesome. The touch screen stuff less so IMO.

I wonder which will turn out to be best in Windows 7? Touch screen or speech recognition? It had better be the latter IMO.

People have already got used to using wireless keyboards/mice for their media center PC's. So reverting to a touch screen where they need to get up and burn some calories is not going to be popular. Speech recognition will be very very popular though, in this example.

I dont think voie recognition will completly make the keyboard redundant. How about librarys, offices and other facilites with tens or hundreds of people working? Can't see voice recognition particually taking of there.

The only real benifit of the touch screen features of windows 7 that I can see would be in laptops where you are working in close proximity with the screen, and may not have a mouse.

Great! All the effort I go to keeping my screen dirt/fingerprint clear and now Microsoft want us to cover the things in prints.

Vista has speech recognition though?
I only don't use it coz the lazy ***** forgot to add Dutch speech recognition, or forgot to add english speech recognition to an OS set @ Dutch ( when I change to english, speech recog mysteriously works fine and doesn't whine about not having that language, what's up MS why can't I use eng speech recog. with a dutch OS  ?)

Fair enough it looks nice, but it can never replace the mouse and keyboard.

One simple reason is games, how could anyone play a game such as cod4 for example using a touchscreen, and not mouse & keyboard.

Vista does. However Windows 7 will polish it off and introduce it to new users at the very start and bring about the hardware wave. If you wanted to buy a stereo mic for Vista right now you'd have a bit of a job I reckon.
